Challenge Trophies

ETwA runs a singles challenge trophy (the "Jubilee Trophy") and a pairs challenge trophy (the "Golden Squidger"). The current status of both events is described below.

Go to The Golden Squidger

Both competitions are normally played over 5 games (though other lengths have been played in the past by mutual agreement between participants). Those players wishing to challenge the reigning champion(s) should notify the ETwA Secretary (Andrew Garrard). The Secretary maintains the list of challengers which corresponds to the order in which the challenges are to be played. Challengers are allowed to "jump the queue" above those who challenged earlier by mutual agreement between the participants. In the event that there are any particularly long delays in arranging matches, the Secretary may remove challengers from the list. Players are not normally allowed to challenge again after losing a Jubilee match for a three month period.

Historically the Jubilee trophy has a mixed background. At one time it was taken "seriously". Charles Relle won it, and successfully defended the title for 13 matches (acquiring at the same time an infamous reputation for his "loopy juice"). After a period without many matches, it was revived and fell into the hands of Andy Purvis. After a similarly large number of successful defences of his title, people stopped challenging him and the event again stopped being played for a number of years.

After a long period without any challenges, Andy chose to relinquish the title. The winner between the two challengers then on the list played a match to decide the new Jubilee champion, and challenges have since been played in the traditional fashion.
