2. World Pairs (WP)

This is similar to the World Singles event, but challenges are awarded to winners of the National Pairs tournaments. The World Pairs title has been competed for less frequently than the World Singles, largely because of the logistical difficulties of getting the relevant four people together at the same time (which is a problem when they are on different sides of the Atlantic).

3. ETwA National Singles

This is probably the most prestigious open tournament (i.e. anyone can enter), and is for the English national title. There are normally qualifying leagues on the first day of competition, followed by a 8, 10 or 12-player all-play-all final on the second day. The winner gains a challenge for the World Singles title (as does the top national if the winner is a foreigner).

4. ETwA National Pairs

This is the English Pairs tournament. Fixed pairings compete in a weekend tournament that is sometimes all-play-all, but sometimes has a qualification stage. The exact format used each year depends on the number of entrants and the whim of the tournament organisers. The winners are entitled to challenge for the World Pairs title. Because some top players choose occasionally to pair up with weaker partners, the finishing order tends to be less of a guide to a player's ability than Singles events.
